Lesson 4

To Be Determined

Use the discriminant to predict solution types.

Learning Focus

Use the discriminant to determine the number and type of solutions.

Big idea

For ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0, the discriminant is D=b2−4acD=b^2-4ac.

  • D>0D>0: two real solutions (rational if DD is a perfect square).
  • D=0D=0: one real (repeated) solution.
  • D<0D<0: no real solutions (two complex).

Worked example

x2+4x+5=0x^2+4x+5=0: D=16−20=−4<0D=16-20=-4<0. No real solutions; the parabola never touches the xx-axis.

Takeaways

  • DD is the expression under the square root in the quadratic formula.
  • DD predicts the number of xx-intercepts.
  • D=0D=0 means the vertex lies on the xx-axis.
