Lesson 9

Lining Up Quadratics

Match equations to graphs and key features.

Learning Focus

Match quadratic equations to graphs by using vertex, direction, intercepts, and points.

Big idea

Checklist:

  1. Direction (sign of aa).
  2. Vertex (h,k)(h,k) and axis x=hx=h.
  3. yy-intercept (set x=0x=0).
  4. xx-intercepts (set y=0y=0): none, one, or two.

Worked example

Vertex (2,−3)(2,-3), opens up: y=(x−2)2−3y=(x-2)^2-3. Its xx-intercepts: (x−2)2=3(x-2)^2=3, so x=2±3x=2\pm\sqrt3, two intercepts. yy-intercept: 4−3=14-3=1.

Takeaways

  • Use the vertex first, then one more point to find aa.
  • An upward parabola with vertex below the xx-axis has two xx-intercepts.
  • Verify a match by testing a point.
