Lesson 6

Half Interested or More Interesting

Investigate half-life style exponential change.

Learning Focus

Model half-life style decay with exponential functions and compare it to interest-style growth.

Big idea

If a quantity starts at AA and halves every hh units of time:

f(t)=A(12)t/hf(t)=A\left(\tfrac12\right)^{t/h}

  • Half-life hh: time for the quantity to drop to half.
  • Every hh units multiplies by 12\tfrac12, so after kk half-lives you have A(12)kA\left(\tfrac12\right)^k.
  • Growth with interest uses A(1+r)tA(1+r)^t with r>0r>0; decay uses a factor between 00 and 11.

Worked example

A medicine has 8080 mg with half-life 33 hours.

  • After 3 hr: 4040 mg
  • After 6 hr: 2020 mg
  • After 9 hr: 1010 mg

Model: f(t)=80(12)t/3f(t)=80\left(\tfrac12\right)^{t/3}. At t=6t=6: 80⋅14=2080\cdot\tfrac14=20 ✓.

Takeaways

  • Count how many half-lives have passed, then multiply by 12\tfrac12 that many times.
  • Decay factor is between 0 and 1; growth factor is greater than 1.
  • The exponent t/ht/h converts time into number of half-lives.
